Farewell Ally

So sorry to start the new year on a sad note, having heard from Hilary Wyer of the death on Sunday of Ally Boughton.

Ally’s Rossacre kennel was prominent in the ‘80s and ‘90s, based on a mix of Kaytop and Deavitte breeding. Her first CC winner in the breed was the Dorian son Deavitte Golden Emblem of Rossacre, bred by Margo Parsons. He was the sire of Ch Kaytop Dice of Rossacre, bred by Leila Moore, who was a group winner under Derek Rayne, and he in turn sired Ch Pinelake Rhoulette of Rossacre, bred by Marilyn Colman.

These and a lot of her other dogs were of the rich deep red colour which we so seldom see in the ring today.

Of the homebred Rossacres, the best known was probably Rhegal Lad who went on to gain titles in Scandinavia.

Ally’s Cardigan, Deavitte Blue Fox of Rossacre, sired the famous Ch Corben Tri Try Again. She had owned a number of other breeds including German Shepherds, Labradors and Papillons in which she did well with Inixia bloodlines.

Although it has been a long time since we last saw her at a show, she retained her interest in the breed and was one of the breeders interviewed by Michael Gross for his Vogue article on the Queen’s Corgis a few years ago.

Our sympathy goes to her family and close friends.

As the new season starts let’s thank all those who campaign their Pembrokes around the shows and especially those who support the open shows. No one is more enthusiastic in that respect than Tracy Irving, very often with great success. At the big two-day Luton open show Twinan Shake The Tree was BOB under Josh Henderson and won the group from Pam Blay.

Louise Hill also reports group success from premier open shows - Daleabbey’s Aurora was PG4 at Bakewell and sister Apple Pie was G4 at Kingston.

Dawn Woodey's new bobtail baby Elmsmere Steal A Star for Barawood was PG4 at Taunton, first time out at six months.

At the South East Corgi Association open show on February 8, Pem judge will now be Jamie Skull (Estelamay).

The Dutch Welsh Corgi Association held its first specialty just before Christmas, judged by senior breeder Jan Ebels (Scarlet Home). Both top spots went to Russia with Olga Shuvalova’s Andvol Shubert (Andvol Zherar ex Andvol Murakami) taking BOB and BIS, handled by Lisa Croft-Elliott, and Natalia Filatova’s Ch Andvol Evrika (Ch Hazelmere Bound For Glory ex Andvol Berberi) was BOS Pem.

Good to receive the PWCCA newsletter with comprehensive coverage of last year’s national specialty.

Continuing our review of the 2019 show scene, here are the best puppy winners where CCs were offered. One show had no pups present, sadly.

No one needs to be told who was the dominant puppy, with no fewer than 11 BP awards along with her six CCs before her birthday. This was Chris and Nicki Blance’s bitch Penliath Bill Me Later (Am/NZ Ch Coventry Esquire ex Ch Penliath Femme Fatale).

Four-time winners were Sue Harrison’s tri bobtail dog Haresfoot Danny Boy (Towernaglen Red Dragon with Ceranda ex Haresfoot Zena) and Tracy and Kath Irving’s Twinan Shake The Tree (Twinan Dip Yer Butty ex Twinan Just The Ticket).

Wynne and Delyth Davies’ bitch Craigycor Top Model at Ceranda (Ch/Ir Ch Craigycor Lightning Bolt ex Craigycor Ceranda Gower Glory) won twice as did Kay Hogg’s Daleabbey’s Anything Goes Keltybrae (Merthyr Wanda-Win The Toss for Ryslip ex Craigycor Lady Million at Daleabbey).

Single winners were Alan and Sarah Matthews’ bitch Ir Ch Craigycor Frozen (plus a CC, Aus Sup Ch Aberlee Take It To The Limit ex Craigycor Betty Boop), Mary Davies’ dog Ermyn Snazzy Jazzy (Ch Nireno Luke Skywalker ex Ermyn Chasing Rainbows), Judy Down’s dog Elessar Royal Salute (Jonloran King Of Clubs ex Wallfugh Xmas Eggnog for Elessar), Vittoria Valsecchi’s Wallfugh Its A Kind Of Magic (from Italy, Int/It/Slo Gr/Cro Gr Ch Wallfugh Ink To Nireno Picture ex Int/It/Slo/SM Ch Nireno Bluegrass of Kippen), Kevin Dover, Lars Saether and Allan Taylor’s Australian-bred dog Anwyl Tell Me When (Aus Ch Anwyl Leaving On A Fast Train ex Aus Ch Anwyl Tell It Like It Is), and Hilary and Ray Wyer’s tri dog Cottivy Cappuccino (Cottivy Skyfall ex Brisam Mokka at Cottivy).

Bill Me Later won two puppy groups, two PG2 and two PG3; Shake The Tree a PG2 and PG4; Cappuccino a PG2; and Anything Goes a PG4.

On to the veterans; not all the shows have an official BV which seems a pity. Here we again had an obvious leader in Mary Davies’ evergreen tri boy Ch/Rus/Ukr Ch Ermyn Snow Knight (Ch/Am Ch Rosewood Set Sail to Salvenik ex Wharrytons Pansy Potter at Ermyn) who was BV at 11 CC shows, and added three more CCs to his total.

Double winners were Lorraine Weedall and Nicola Bogue’s tri dog Ch Bronabay Troopin The Colour (Ch Highworth Northern Lights over Pendrell ex Ch Bronabay Cherish The Moment), Gill Legerton’s bitch Ermyn Flickering Flame at Solaw (Snow Knight ex Janjinks Wild Honey at Ermyn) and Babs and Wally Aylott’s tri bitch Barwal Belle (Foxfire Red Ruffian at Pemland ex Pemcader Belroyd Zoe of Barwal).

BV once during the year were Carole Turner’s bitch Cottonfields Hecate (plus a CC, Zeus ex Powdermill Magic Gold for Cottonfields), Anne Petitpierre’s tri bitch Ch Brynlluan Wind Runner to Kulla (Kulla Kanwar ex Ellhar Good Time Girl at Brynlluan), Dave and Jaine Asbridge’s bitch Ch Chililabomwe Snowdrop (Ch Salvenik Star Made ex Chililabomwe Titania); Carole Turner’s tri bitch Cottonfields Black Eye’d Pea (Ir/Rus/Est Ch Craigycor Elfwish Mib ex Brynlluan Midnight Glow over Cottonfields); Mary Magness’ dog Cordach Pirate King at Pemland (Barwal Buccaneer Boy at Pemland ex Ch Cordach Glamour Girl); and Ken and Babs Dolan’s bitch Ermyn Fire And Flame at Roseholme (another by Snow Knight ex Wild Honey).

Snow Knight won a second and fourth in veteran groups.

A few shows also schedule junior groups and Twinan Shake The Tree won a JG1 and 2 while Ena Ellwood’s Salvenik Silk Rose for Ellhar (Redfordhill Magic Moments to Salvenik ex Bertley Autumnal Rose with Salvenik) won a JG4.
