I am sure we area all thinking of our friends in Australia who are having to cope with the quite dreadful fires in so many parts of the country, and must be praying for some rain. Looking at the continually updated maps of where the fires are affecting is terrifying in itself.
Of course the situation can be even worse when you have livestock to contend with. Sadly some bad news comes of one of the country’s longest standing breeders, Norma Turner (Norbyn) from New South Wales, who has lost her house. Thankfully she, John and niece Nettie are all safe, and the majority of their dogs were able to be evacuated, but tragically their two house dogs, Doc and Snooker, didn’t make it. Snooker was Ch Haresfoot Pot Black, bred in England by Sue Harrison 13 years ago by Ch Corgold Harry Potter ex Haresfoot Kara.
Our thoughts and sympathy are with Norma and family and we hope they and everyone else affected can get their lives back on track.
Carrying on our review of the 2019 show scene, here’s a summary of the bitch winners. I hope it’s still PC to call them bitches - I noticed the big ring commentator at the LKA referred only to ‘females’!
Leading the field is Penliath Bill Me Later, bred and owned by Chris and Nicki Blance from an AI mating by Am/NZ Ch Coventry Esquire ex Ch Penliath Femme Fatale. She has taken six CCs, one with BOB, and remarkably all six came before her first birthday.
She was the first Pem for 40 years, and fourth overall, to win three CCs while still a puppy, and the second youngest and youngest bitch to do so. She then became only the second ever, and the youngest, to take four CCs as a pup, and is the first ever to win five or six at that age.
Another from this kennel, Ch Penliath Sent From Coventry, won her title and five CCs, three with BOB. She is co-owned with her breeders by Bill Shelton and Steve Leyerly from the US. She is from another AI litter by Am Ch Ninacorte Chicago Hope ex Coventry Dancing With The Stars for Penliath.
She was the second from the litter to become a champion in 2019, following on from Ch Spanner In The Worx, and with a sister becoming a champion last year this was the fourth time in breed history there have been three UK champions in a litter. As I wrote in the notes on the winning males, the Stadwen litter went one ahead later in the year when Sirocco gained his title.
Ch Whitebarn Sea Shell won three CCs, having previously taken another, plus one BOB and gained her title. She’s a first champion for her breeders Margaret and Ian Hoggarth and (in the breed) for owners Hannah and Pat Fawcett. She is by Ch Pemcader Thunderball ex Whitebarn Tabitha Twitchit.
Also on three CCs (total ten) and one BOB was Barry and Sue Coulson’s Ch Woodhenge Star Xtravaganza. She is by Ch/Ir Ch Craigycor Lightning Bolt ex Ch Woodhenge Star Maiden.
Three CCs (total nine) went to Alan and Wendy Rees’ Ch Stadwen Tinkerbell (litter sister to Ch Figaro, by Ch Stadwen Spartakus ex Stadwen Prima Donna).
Daughter Amanda won two CCs to complete a title, plus a BOB, with Ch/Aus Ch Jopearl First Noelle at Breconmohr for Stadwen, the first UK Ch bred in Australia, by Joanne McCann and John Burgess by Aus/Am GCh Hum’nbird Rock Your Socks ex Aus Ch Jopearl A Little Night Music. With a G4 she was the only bitch to take a group place.
Two CCs and a BOB also went to Teresa Maddox’s homebred Salvenik Summer Rosebud (Redfordhill Magic Moments to Salvenik ex Ch Bertley Summer Rose with Salvenik).
Taking one CC and BOB as a puppy was Alan and Sarah Matthews’ Ir Ch Craigycor Frozen, from an AI litter by Aus Ch Aberlee Leave It To Me ex Craigycor Betty Boop.
The first CC winner (plus BOB) bred in Latvia was Ena Ellwood’s tri Amberynlea Dark Desire with Ellhar, bred by Natalya Yermakova by Am Ch Mapleleaf Wisus The Knight In Black ex Int/Lat/Lit/Est/Cz Ch Tuja Medaus Lietus.
Also on one CC (total four) plus BOB was Ch Penliath Sent To Coventry (the other member of the Chicago Hope/Dancing With The Stars litter), co-owned by breeders Chris and Nicki Blance with Bill Shelton and Beckie Williams from the US.
A first CC with BOB went to Tracy and Kath Irving’s homebred Twinan Shake The Tree (Twinan Dip Yer Butty ex Twinan Just The Ticket).
A single CC went to bobtail Russian visitor Rus Ch Aethwy Anya (bred by Andrew Khvatov by Am/Rus/Int Ch Dragonjoy Some Bunny For Love ex Rus Ch Otreks Dancing Queen at Aethwy and owned by Dmitry Prokopenko) and to Carole Turner’s homebred Cottonfields Hecate (Ch Pemcader Belroyd Zeus ex Powdermill Magic Gold for Cottonfields), who at 13 years may very well be the oldest Pem bitch to win a CC.
That’s a wrap for the CC winners. At Crufts, judge Anne Macdonald, Thunderball was BOB for the third year running and Anya made it a bobtail double. Mary Davies judged at the League show where Stadwen Lancelot was BIS and Star Xtravaganza won the CC for the second year.
Kennels with multiple winners were: Stadwen, three new champions (two homebred) and two other homebred CC winners; Penliath, two new homebred champions, a homebred ‘babychamp’ and another homebred CC winner. Three of these are co-owned with Coventry (USA); Twinan, three CC winners, two of them homebred; Craigycor, three CC winners, two of them homebred; Ellhar, a homebred new champion and a CC winner; Woodhenge, two CC winners, one homebred; Salvenik, two CC winners, one homebred; Aethwy (Russia), bred two CC winners.
Ch Pemcader Belroyd Zeus sired three CC winners including the new record holder. Am Ch Ninacorte Chicago Hope sired three CC winners (two new Chs) in one litter.
Siring two CC winners were Ch/Ir Ch Craigycor Lightning Bolt, Ch Stadwen Spartakus (littermates, one a new champion) and Twinan Dip Yer Butty.
Coventry Dancing With The Stars for Penliath produced three CC winning littermates (two new Chs), Stadwen Prima Donna two littermates (one new Ch) and Craigycor Betty Boop two by different sires.
Ch Pemcader Thunderball won CCs and sired a new Ch. Redfordhill Magic Moments to Salvenik won CCs and sired a CC winner. Ir Ch Craigycor Viva Las Vegas won a CC and sired a CC winner. Ch/Rus/Ukr Ch Ermyn Snow Knight won CCs and sired a CC winner (and is in the pedigree of several others).
Three CC winners were bobtails: the new record holder, a new champion and one of the Russians. One CC winner, a veteran, was docked.
I’ll look at the RCC, BP and BV winners in future instalments; meanwhile a happy Christmas to all Corgi owners everywhere.
