Two new champions from Manchester show

Manchester show may not have been the warmest in our hall but it ended up a cheerful day for the breed with two new champions at the year’s first CC show.

Fran Fricker (Kerman Cardigans) was the judge and her DCC winner was Teresa Maddox’s Redfordhill Magic Moments to Salvenik. He therefore becomes the first UK champion Pem bred in. Denmark, so I’m sure there were celebrations there at the home of breeder Charlotte Wessel.

His sister Simply Magic also came to the UK, to their dam’s breeder Joy Williams, and she has a CC. Magic Moments himself has a daughter with two CCs and another with one. His first CC came at Welsh KC last year from Gill Legerton and his second at Welsh Corgi Club under Margaret Riley.

The breeding contains lines from quite a number of countries. His sire is Russian-bred Dan Ch Mistycor Once Upon A Dream, the result of mating a New Zealand-bred bitch, Rus Ch Dwynella Gimme That Look, to Teresa’s Ch Salvenik Set To Star (himself by the US import Ch/Am Ch Rosewood Set Sail to Salvenik).

Gimme That Look is by Australian-bred Aus/NZ/Am Ch Aberlee Phantom Sequence, who has been influential worldwide, ex a daughter of US-bred Am/Can Ch Sandyshire’s The Phantom.

Magic Moments’ dam is Welsh-bred Dan Ch Vuedor Could It Be Magic who is by Joy’s Italian import Welshcorgimania Daredevil at Vuedor. He comes from two UK exports, It/Slo/Cro/Aust Ch Wharrytons Dennis Potter for Samovar (Ch Corgold Harry Potter ex CC winner Ermyn Fly To The Moon) and It/Mont Ch Craigycor Argentine Tango, a sister of Viva La Diva (Ch/Ir/Am Ch Shavals Fire Classic at Craigycor ex US import Ir/Am Ch Elfwish Sally Ride).

Maternal granddam of the new champion is Vuedor Amazing Grace, a daughter of Ch/Rus/Ukr Ch Ermyn Snow Knight (Set Sail ex a sister of Dennis Potter) out of a daughter of Ch Dream Maker at Poldamerik (bred by Joy). The Vuedor bitch line goes back through some Irish bitches to Cinonnie, Ch Revelmere Rose Cocker, Vennwoods and Stormerbanks.

Teresa and Pat have had a sad time recently with the loss of a number of Salveniks, including Salvenik Set To Impress (sister of Set To Star) and her younger sister, Jean Bloomfield’s Salvenik Share The Dream with Oakcap, as well as others I’ve mentioned before, so let’s hope this success is the start of a happier year.

Fran’s bitch CC and BOB winner was Nicki and Chris Blance’s Penliath Bill Me Later who thus becomes a champion with her seventh CC at just under 13 months, her previous six all coming as a puppy. I’ll need to do some research to see if she is the youngest Pem champion since the age rule was introduced about 50 years ago (there were two puppy champions before that, and one other ‘babychamp’ since).

Her previous CCs came at Leeds (Martin Sanders), South Wales (Tracy Irving), Pennine and Yorkshire (Betsey Orman), Midland Counties (Rod Oldham), Cambria (Teresa Maddox) and LKA (Alan Matthews).

Chrtis and Nicki have bred several champions using artificial insemination and this is another.

They have worked closely in recent years with the Coventry kennel in the US and Bill Me Later is by Am/NZ Ch Coventry Esquire (Am Ch Woodbine Flashy Alibi ex Am GCh Coventry Vanity Fair), who is brother to Am GCh Coventry Allure at Wyndstar (grandmother of their recent three-champion litter).

Flashy Alibi is a younger brother of Ch Aladar and Alyssum, who were imported to the UK, and is by Am Ch Nebriowa Double Exposure ex Am Ch Kingscote Woodbine Alibi.

Vanity Fair is by AmCh/Aus Sup Ch Coventry Quest (by Am Ch Ninacorte Chicago Hope, brother of Ch/Am Ch Ninacorte Star Caster at Woodhenge and himself sire of the three-champion litter) ex Am Ch Coventry Naughty But Nice (by the top producing Am Ch Tallyrand No Greater Love).

Bill Me Later’s dam Ch Penliath Femme Fatale is by Ch Penliath Vanilla Ice (Penliath Desert Storm ex Penliath Vanilla Sky) ex Ch Penliath Billie Jean (Ch Pemcader Belroyd Zeus ex Ch/Ir/Int/Ch Penliath Fatal Attraction). Fatal’s sire Ch Penliath Flash Dancer was from the combination of Star Caster and Penliath Edwina which also appears several times behind Vanilla Ice.

This is only the third time there have been four generations of UK Pem champion bitches. Mary Winsone’s four, also all homebred, are Cordach Georgy Girl, Glamour Girl, Cover Girl and Victorian Secret. Beryle Thompson had Evancoyd Unique, Unforgettable, Miss Daring and Dream Girl of E, three of them homebred.

RDCC, his first green card, and BP (over his litter sister) went to Kevin Dover, Lars Saether and Allan Taylor’s Australian import Anwyl Tell Me When (Aus Ch Anwyl Leaving On A Fast Train ex Aus Ch Anwyl Tell It Like It Is), and RBCC to Alan and Sarah Matthews Ir Ch Craigycor Frozen (Aus Sup Ch Aberlee Take It To The Limit ex Craigycor Betty Boop), who was BOB here last year as a puppy.

BV (over his daughter) was the DCC’s great-grandsire, Mary Davies’ tri Ch /Rus/Ukr Ch Ermyn Snow Knight (Ch/Am Ch Rosewood Set Sail to Salvenik ex Wharrytons Pansy Potter of Ermyn).

Who would have thought, a few years ago, that the breed in its country of origin would become quite so cosmopolitan, the DCC a Danish import by a Russian dog, the BOB by AI by an American dog, the RDCC an Australian import, the RBCC by AI by an Australian dog and the BV by an American dog.

Ally Boughton’s funeral is on Thursday February 6 at 12.15 at Aldershot Crematorium, and afterwards at the Princess Royal in Runfold to celebrate her life. Flowers to Alan Greenwood Funeral Directors in Frimley or donations may be made to Dogs Trust or a cancer charity of your choice.
